Successful management manifests the legitimacy of the person. But legitimacy is not a given; it is built over time, and it consists of the legitimacy of use, which the leader proves in everyday situations, and of exceptional legitimacy (which must be proven as soon as situations go beyond the ordinary, and when... all eyes turn to oneself. Being legitimate in usual situations can be quite simple, as the leader is in place to manage the daily routine. But is that enough? Will he be recognized as legitimate when facing exceptional situations, where he will be confronted with the unforeseen, the unknown, what he has not prepared for, and where everyone will have their eyes focused on... him!
A graduate of Saint-Cyr, certified from the war school and an engineer from ENSTA, I commanded for 40 years individuals with diverse profiles and backgrounds, conscripts, volunteers, civilians, and ultimately, internationally renowned scientific experts. I have also been entrusted with individuals facing professional failure, whom no one wanted in their team anymore. With a doctorate in management sciences, my doctoral thesis dedicated to "the security director, a character in search of legitimacy" received 3 thesis awards.

Facing the storm, how companies can draw inspiration from the armed forces
The armed forces are accustomed to acting in extraordinary situations. They always occur unexpectedly, can disorient, surprise, their frequency can be completely random, but they all require a quick, appropriate, and just response. They push to explore new grounds, and yet they are not improvised.
My career has been rich in extraordinary situations. They have forced me to implement what I have learned, but it has never been a simple recitation or a pure copy-paste. I had to adapt this knowledge and the experience gained to the context, the places, the moment, check that the response provided was correct and, if not, adapt it immediately... How to do it? How to prepare for an event of which we only know it may happen, but of which we know nothing: the place, the moment, the nature, its impact? For this, it is necessary to combine what has been learned with a skillfully prepared improvisation. In these situations, the leader is important, he gives direction, sets the tempo, but if his subordinates do not support him, he is powerless. It is then necessary to prepare this cooperation through real subsidiarity and a relationship of mutual respect and trust that has been built and established over time.
Companies, organizations can draw inspiration from the armed forces to prepare themselves for situations that commercial and international tensions will surely invent.
